The music video for Billie Eilish’s haunting ballad Hostage is a visceral exploration of love turned suffocating. At its core, it captures the raw intensity of wanting to be so close to someone that you lose sight of boundaries, leaving them feeling consumed.

“I think that’s something everyone can relate to—loving someone to the point of hurting them,” Billie reflects. “There seems to be a certain beauty to it, but ultimately it’s dangerous and not the kind of love you can or should nurture.”

The video unfolds in a minimalist white room that mirrors Billie’s subconscious. The space ebbs and flows with her feelings, shivering during tender moments and lashing out in the pain of rejection. The narrative follows a choreographed dance between Billie and her lover, their movements shifting from intimacy to entanglement. Gradually, the room becomes an ominous character of its own, as the walls and ceiling begin to envelop and pull her lover in all directions.

What makes Hostage so compelling is its seamless blend of in-camera effects and subtle VFX, creating a tangible connection between the characters and the space around them. These visual elements echo the song’s message: a love so consuming that it isolates, entraps, and ultimately destroys.

For Billie, collaborating with Stromae and Luc was a dream come true. “I was a huge fan of Stromae, and I was blown away by the treatment and vision he and his brother Luc brought to the song. It matched the lyrics and my own vision perfectly,” she shares. The result is a cinematic masterpiece that’s as beautiful as it is unsettling—a perfect reflection of the dangerous allure of love when it turns toxic.
