Multitude has been more than just an album – It’s been an unforgettable journey. With over 870 000 albums sold, triple-platinum status in France, Belgium, and internationally, and 1,1 billion streams, the album has received both critical and commercial acclaim. Multitude captured hearts and headlines, earning praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, NPR, and Pitchfork. Stromae’s media journey was equally triumphant, gracing the stages of prestigious shows like The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert. In a groundbreaking moment, Stromae introduced his single “L’enfer” live on the French TF1 news broadcast, surprising everyone and becoming an instant media sensation. This was followed by a historic achievement—Stromae sold out New York’s Madison Square Garden for two consecutive nights, a major first for any French-speaking artist performing entirely in French.

The Multitude tour transformed concert halls into living dreamscapes. For this third album, Stromae and his team envisioned a show of unparalleled scenic complexity, centered around a groundbreaking device: a colossal 15 x 5 metre screen, supported by ten giant robotic arms, each weighing nearly one ton and a half. Meticulously choreographed, this monumental structure brought each piece to life in a unique tableau, turning the performance into an otherworldly visual symphony.

This titanic work, the result of over six months of dedication, brought together more than 200 people from across the globe, whose expertise and passion were poured into its design and installation.

The tour began in February 2022 with preview shows in Brussels, Paris, and Amsterdam, unveiling the album alongside the innovative stage production. In April 2022, the first part of the tour took off at the prestigious Coachella festival, followed by a European festival circuit, captivating crowds at iconic events such as Werchter Boutique, Eurockéennes, NOS Alive, Les Ardentes, Les Vieilles Charrues, Paléo Festival, Sziget, and Rock en Seine. From there, the tour continued to North America where fans in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Washington, Boston, and Quebec were immersed into Stromae’s musical universe. Early 2023 brought the tour back to Europe for several additional dates before the remaining shows were canceled, marking the end of the tour’s first half, from February 2022 to March 2023. It was an extraordinary adventure —one that Paul and the entire team were determined to conclude on a higher note.

The Multitude film serves as a tribute to the fans whose support and kindness carried the journey through the unexpected challenges of the tour. The unwavering empathy shown, especially after the cancellation of the second half, deeply moved the entire team. This film immortalizes that experience, capturing the immense effort behind the show and sharing it freely with everyone. It’s a story that deserves to be experienced by everyone. The film premieres on TMC and on TF1+, followed by an online release on YouTube where it will be available for free without advertisements.

“‘I was deeply touched by the audience’s empathy. And that’s why we wanted to create something special for them. This film is our way of saying thank you.” — Stromae (Paul Van Haver)

The creation of Multitude, the Film began with a meticulous journey to gather all the existing footage from the first half of the tour—material never originally intended for this purpose. It was a long and intricate process, piecing together moments captured in venues and festivals, both by day and night. The result is a film that thrives on its patchwork nature, embracing every imperfection. These raw, yet carefully crafted moments create a distinctive and captivating experience—a vibrant, unforgettable collage of the Multitude journey.

“‘Initially, the idea was to film the live show at the ING Arena in Brussels in June 2023. When the tour was interrupted, the project had to be abandoned. But, supported by the goodwill of the audience and our desire to immortalize the work done so far, the project was resurrected in another form.” — Luc Van Haver

“‘In total, we put together over 1,500 shots – a real jigsaw puzzle! This patchwork editing gives the film a unique identity. You feel like you’re everywhere at once. You go from one country to another and from one theatre to another, each with its own unique points of view. The only constant is Stromae and his show.” — Cyprien Delire
